Bob/Oliver left this world today, surrounded by the people he loved, under the pepper tree outside his home. He went peacefully, assisted in his crossing by a compassionate veterinarian. It turns out that he had bone cancer, which he endured stoically. He never gave any indication of the tremendous amount of pain he must have been in during the past several months.
Bob/Oliver walked into my life at Sequoia Humane Society in June of 2007. He was delivered by a good samaritan who supposedly found him at Hansens truck stop. He had no hair on his back end, and was covered with scabs from a severe flea allergy. I was standing at the door when he limped into SHS, and he walked right into my open arms. From that moment I knew he had a forever home with me, and I followed him to McKinleyville Shelter where I picked him up after the stray wait period. Companion Animal Fund and McKinleyville Animal Care Center generously collected donations to help in his care, which was greatly appreciated.
He recovered beautifully from his flea problem and all the hair grew back eventually. He walked with me and my pack in Hiller park, and down at the beach in Eureka. When we arrived in San Diego he went with us on dog trips to Mission Bay and even swam in the water to retrieve a tennis ball on a couple occasions. The attached photo was taken during this period, right after we moved down to San Diego, when he was at his best.
Bob was always a perfect gentleman, putting up with boisterous children and rowdy dogs. Perfectly housebroken til the end, the last thing he did was go outside to go potty before collapsing under the pepper tree. Although he was already leaving this world, he wagged his tail several times as I sat next to him, waiting for the vet to arrive. Although I will miss him, he will be in my heart forever. Michelle.
I first saw Mykee as a scared feral kitten huddled under an abandoned railroad car. He was so starved he let me get close enough to catch him. He struggled some, but quickly discovered that chin pets are good, and began purring right away. Mykee didn’t have a mean bone in his body. He always deferred to the other cats in the household, and he liked to snuggle with the dogs. His life was short but sweet, and we will remember him with love.
Brandi was a pure bred Saint Bernard born May 25th 1997. Brandi passed away April 6th 2009 a month short of reaching 12 years old, which is amazing for a large breed dog.
Brandi never once barked out of aggression in her entire life. She was well known in Fortuna where she enjoyed long walks all her life. People that met her would always stop and ask if they could pet her. Other people would honk and wave and go so far as to turn their cars around to ask if they could stroke her soft long fur. During Apple harvest, Autorama or Rodeo parade, she always drew a crowd. Everyone that met Brandi melted at the site of her and was blessed to know her. She was well loved and gave it back many times over.
Brandi belonged to Elly Burger, who became manager of Sequoia Humane Society’s thrift store. Brandi then became a Donation dog for the Sequoia Humane Society, wandering among the shoppers at Henderson Center Farmers Market in the summer of 2008. Wearing her bright red donation vest, Brandi raised over $1200 until she collapsed in one day at the Market due to a heart problem. She was later given a pace maker at UC Davis that cured the problem. Unfortunately, arthritis started affecting her more and more.
One a bright sunny spring day, Brandi told her owners it was time. Doctor Hunter, who had a special place in his heart for Brandi, came to her house to help her go to sleep one last time. Under her favorite Cherry blossom tree, she loved to lay under, her masters laid next to her petting and massaging her as she made the journey across “The Rainbow Bridge”.
Chinook, a female American Bobtail, was adopted from the Sequoia Humane Society 5 years ago. She has provided great companionship to Nicolle Walsh. She has traveled with her abroad and back to the states. Chinook passed away due to liver failure. It has been a tremendous loss and a difficult decision to say goodbye.
Mishka was a shitzu and a loving companion to Tom Ayotte. About 8 years ago he was diagnosed with fibrous cancer in his front leg. It had to be amputated. His dad was totally devoted to him and very much spoiled. He was a happy little guy that sat up and also danced.
Mercury was adopted from the Sequoia Humane Society 15 years ago at the age of 11 months. We called him Mercury because he’d run as fast as a bullet down the beach, like the running back Mercury Morris. Unfortunately his speedy years were cut short when he ruptured a disk in his spine at the age of 5. After being paralyzed for 6 months Mercury learned to walk again, but his balance and speed were never very good. With age he lost more and more of his mobility, along with his hearing, eyesight and bladder control. But he never lost his spunk! Even when Mercury could no longer stand up by himself his eyes were bright and he was ready to go! Those of us who knew him will always love him dearly.
Jane "Griffith" - companion and best friend of Kathryn Griffith - passed away at the age of 15 recently. Jane was a happy, friendly dog that was
never known to pass up a handout, espeically if it was roast beef, salami or almost anything else that was edible! She was also talented at getting her
own doggie treats out of the bottom door.
Sally lived nine long, happy years, frolicking on the beach, chasing birds and balls, before succumbing to cancer.
Flo lived her last days cared for by the dedicated staff and volunteers at the Sequoia Humane Society, where she died of severe liver disease.
Speedy's short life started out poorly, but his last months were spent happily galloping down the halls of the Sequoia Humane Society with his feline buddy, Chloe. Speedy was plagued by a chronic skin condition that affected his ability to heal and caused him much discomfort, but it was a severe and sudden asthma attack that eventually ended Speedy's life. He will be remembered for his silly, tounge-filled smile!
