Here's What to Do For a Lost Pet:

    1.   Call the County Animal Shelter (840-9132) to report lost or found pets.

    2.   Visit the County Animal Shelter as soon as possible and look for your pet. The Shelter should be visited at least once every 24 hours and at a minimum of once every 48 hours.

    3.    Visit the Humboldt County Animal Shelter's list of lost pets on http://www.petharbor.com (type in your zip code click on 'Find Shelters, then select Humboldt County Animal Services and click on 'Search'; select the button 'I lost my pet' and specify breed, etc.).

    4.   Make lost pet posters. Include a picture, description and information on how to get in touch with you. Post them at public places in your neighborhood. (Check local ordinances on posting)

   5.   Check with your friends and neighbors. Make 3" X 5" file cards with the appropriate information and distribute them in your neighborhood.

    6.   Keep in contact with the shelter.

    7.   The Times-Standard will place free notices of lost and found pets in their classified section. Contact them at (707) 441-0555.

    8.   The North Coast Journal also runs pet Lost and Found classifieds FREE of charge. Contact them at (707) 826-2000 or ncjournal@northcoastjournal.com.

Remember...
You know your pet better than anyone and the ultimate responsibility for finding it is yours. Calling us is an important first step but with hundreds of dogs and cats coming to the shelter each month, it is not possible to accurately identify a pet over the telephone. The only way to reliably identify a pet is 'in person,' so visit us often!
