Who can leave a legacy?
You don't have to be wealthy to leave a legacy. Everybody has an estate. Your money, property and personal belongings constitute your estate.
How do I leave a legacy? Contact your insurance agent, lawyer, accountant, or financial planner. Your favorite nonprofit organization and/or North Coast Legacy are also good sources of information.
Can I leave a gift in memory of a loved one or for a specific purpose or organization?
You sure can, if you state it in your will. By designating your wishes legally, you can guarantee that the legacy goes to the causes you care about.
Do I have to notify the organization that I've left them a gift?
It is entirely your decision, but informing them would allow acknowledgment and recognition of your generosity.
Is money the only planned gift I can give?
No. You can donate your house or car, life insurance, stocks and bonds, furniture or art. Ask a professional how it's done.
