IMPROVING THE SHELTER FOR THE ANIMALSby Cynthia MacMillan, Executive Director, Sequoia Humane Society The Sequoia Humane Society's Shelter and Pet Adoption Center is housed in an old cinderblock building, built to serve the needs of the California Highway Patrol many years ago. Animal care was not considered in its construction, but we have adapted the structure to accommodate our furry friends, and continue to look for ways to improve its functionality to enhance the animals' comfort. Last year Carol Whitehurst generously donated funds to renovate our cat adoption room, with 2-story condos that give the cats extra space & better air circulation. This coming year we hope to raise funds for several additional projects. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a place where cats could stretch their legs and get some fresh air? An outdoor cat-exercise area, with catnip plants to roll in and ramps to play on is just the ticket! With a little fencing, some planter boxes and boards for perches we can give our feline residents a much needed retreat from their solitary enclosures. Have you ever noticed how much it rains in Humboldt County? Ever take your dog for a walk in the rain? Yup-both of you end up getting wet, and it's not always a pleasant experience. The dogs at SHS are walked 3-times a day, and each one gets to spend some time in our outdoor pens...except when it rains. But with some heavy-duty tarp we can put covers on the doggie play areas so that our canine companions can enjoy themselves, rain or shine! An unfortunate necessity of the shelter environment is that dogs need to be housed in individual kennels, which historically have been constructed to meet very minimum space requirements, and are often a significant cause of stress for the animals. It is our dream to re-construct the kennel area to build larger living areas for the dogs, with indoor/outdoor access from each kennel. Additionally, we would like to develop an indoor exercise area for the dogs, which can be used for obedience training as well as one-on-one off-leash playtime with the animals. Since becoming a "no-kill" shelter, many of the animals that come to the Sequoia Humane Society become long-term residents, until their forever home is found. We need to address not only the primary needs of the animals in our care-such as food, water & medical treatment- but also their social and emotional needs as well. Animals that are happy and healthy are more adoptable than animals suffering from loneliness or anxiety. Please, help us help our animal friends by considering a donation to support these capital improvements. Together we can create a positive environment for abandoned animals, until the day when there are no more homeless pets!
