| Home Foreclosures On the Rise-What Happens to the Pets? |
| With a foreclosure crisis sweeping the nation,
fears have risen that some residents will leave their pets
behind if they are forced to move. If you or someone you
know is in danger of losing their home, consider taking
proactive measures to protect your pets from becoming
homeless too.Check with family and friends to see if your
pet (s) can stay with them on a temporary basis while you
look for pet-friendly housing. Research boarding facilities
and temporary housing situations that allow you to keep your
pets with you. |
 |
| Get a list of pet-friendly rentals, and start
building your "pet resume" by requesting letters from your
veterinarian and previous landlords to show that your pet is
vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and that you are a responsible
pet owner. |
Sam's owner hated to give him up, but
after 3 years his landlord changed his mind about pets and
told him to "get rid of the dog or move out." Fortunately,
SHS was able to find another wonderful home for Sam.
|
Don't wait until the last minute-if, as a last
resort, you must re-home your pet, start looking for
potential adopters now. Create a flyer with your pet's name,
description, a picture, and information about their habits
(e.g. likes/dislikes other animals, health condition, etc.)
and post them at pet stores, feed stores, veterinary offices
, businesses and local shelters. Place a free ad in your
local newspapers. Most rescues and shelters are full, so you
will need to place your pet on a waiting list before it can
be accepted into an adoption program, so contact them at
least several weeks before you need to move. Making sure
that your pet is healthy and well-behaved are the best ways
to ensure that they will be accepted into a rental unit, or
adopted into a new home. |
