Volunteer Spotlight
Volunteers from the Humboldt Community Access Resource Center (HCAR) have been coming out to the Sequoia Humane Society since 1995. HCAR's mission is to help their participants connect with the community in useful and self esteem building ways. "We believe our volunteer work at the Humane Society gives us a perfect opportunity to be useful and proud of the work we are able to do." says Donna Shipley from HCAR. "Another benefit ... many of the people we serve have stated that they want to work with animals. Volunteering is the perfect way to get some practical experience and find out if this is really the position for them. Finally, the connection between the animals and the people we serve seems to be good for both." "It’s always a fun event when our HCAR volunteers come down to the shelter," says Cynthia MacMillan, SHS executive director. "You can see the joy on their faces when they connect with the animals. You can tell they truly love being here."
