Thanks, Ernest & May Freeman!
May Lizzy Freeman and Earnest David Freeman met while attending Eureka Business College. They were married in May, 1932 and founded the Freeman Insurance Agency together. May helped start the local chapter of the Humane Society and was a long-time champion of animal protection. Ernest died on October 15th, 1977 and May passed away on December 30th. 2005. Before their deaths the Freemans created a trust at the Humboldt Area Foundation to be used in perpetuity for the spaying and neutering of dogs and cats in Humboldt County, with the goal being to reduce the number of unwanted pets brought to our local shelters and rescues, and eventually to reduce or eliminate the euthanasia of dogs and cats in Humboldt County simply for the reason that there are not enough homes. As of June 30th, 2006 the fund’s balance was $4,795,824.
As stipulated by the trust HAF will reimburse participating veterinarians for 80% of the allowed spay/neuter fee. Vouchers are available through many local animal welfare groups, including the Sequoia Humane Society, as part of their low-cost spay/neuter programs. Since mid-January SHS has issued 255 vouchers through the Freeman Trust program!
Thanks, Ernest & May, for helping us help our animal friends!
