Feline Leukemia is NOT a Death Sentence

Feline Leukemia Not a Death SentenceOn June 17th Ed Lunde was driving in Fields Landing when his dog, Pete stuck his head out the window and started whining and whimpering, then began barking very shrilly. Together they located a diaper box taped shut with a momma kitty and her newborn kittens inside. Ed and his faithful companion brought the rescued felines to the Sequoia Humane Society, where they received emergency care. Shortly thereafter we discovered that the momma cat-named "Olivia" - tested positive for feline leukemia, a virus that affects the immune system and is contagious to other cats.

Feline Leukemia Not a Death Sentence Just two weeks prior six kittens arrived at the Sequoia Humane Society, born to a stray in Fairhaven. All tested positive for feline leukemia, inherited from their mother.

In most other shelters these cats would be euthanized. But the Sequoia Humane Society has cared for-and found homes for-many cats that initially tested positive for FELV. As a no-kill shelter, the Sequoia Humane Society believes that all animals should be given a second chance at life. And because of your generous support we are doing just that-giving homeless animals in our communities a second chance at life.

Feline Leukemia Not a Death Sentence The feline leukemia virus can be passed from a mother cat to her kittens. However, kittens are born with the antibody to the virus and-with good nutrition and TLC-can, in some cases, fight the virus and recover. Even adult cats can just be "carriers" - testing positive for FELV but not showing any symptoms of the feline leukemia illness.

Every month SHS staff re-tests our FELV cats-who must be kept in isolation so as not to infect the other cats at the shelter. Already two of the six kittens have tested negative and are available for adoption, and we are hopeful that the rest will also overcome the virus and find loving homes.

You can help save a life by sponsoring one of our FELV kitties: Olivia, Tommy, Corey, Opal and Mouse, this holiday season. Thanks for helping us help our animal friends!
