Arcata Elementary Helps Animals Find Homes

Laura Leonard takes her Thanksgiving break seriously. As an HSU Social Work student-and an Intern at the Sequoia Humane Society-she's not about to sit around and eat turkey all day. She's on a mission to educate children about responsible pet ownership, and to help find orphaned pets homes.

That's why Laura decided to use her Thanksgiving break to connect school kids with shelter animals. She approached Brian Lovell-coordinator for the 'After School Program' at Arcata Elementary-and asked if she could give a presentation to one of the classes. An enthusiastic, "YES!" brought Laura in front of a group of 25 K-12 students, who were more than happy to help Laura create fun and poignant decorations for the SHS cat and dog rooms.

After an animated game of "musical homes" - where students, playing a game similar to musical chairs, learned that some animals find themselves without homes for no good reason, and that it's not their fault-Laura and her young friends crafted ornaments to hang on the kennels at the Sequoia Humane Society.

When asked to make a special picture for "Toto" - an older Chihuahua cross with a somewhat unattractive facial expression-one girl said, "I don't care if he's not pretty. He deserves a home anyway."
