SEQUOIA HUMANE SOCIETY PARTNERS WITH
THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES
TO PROMOTE NATIONAL SPAY DAY USA

NATIONAL SPAY DAY USA The Sequoia Humane Society will participate in Spay Day USA, a national campaign of The Humane Society of the United Stated (HSUS), to promote the life-saving benefits of spay/neuter. During the month of February the Sequoia Humane Society has joined with the Companion Animal Foundation to offer $5 spay/neuter vouchers for feral cats, as well as their regular price of $10 for owned cats and $20 for dogs.

"Spay/neuter protects pet health, improves pet behavior, and lessens the burden on animal shelters and taxpayers," says Cynthia MacMillan, executive director of the Sequoia Humane Society. "We are inviting our citizens to help us save the lives of countless unwanted dogs and cats by spaying and neutering their own pets, and encouraging their friends, family and co-workers to do the same. You can also help by sponsoring the spay/neuter surgery of one cat or dog from a low-income family by making a donation to our low-cost spay/neuter voucher program."

This year marks the thirteenth annual Spay Day USA. Since Spay Day USA's inception in 1995, participants have altered an estimated 1,366,000 animals. It has been a proud achievement of Spay Day USA participants like the Sequoia Humane Society and other spay/neuter programs that the number of homeless animals euthanized in the U.S. has fallen from approximately 13 million in 1973 to about four million currently.

Here are some facts about spay/neuter:

  • Spaying and neutering are safe, simple surgeries that stop animals from reproducing. Females are spayed; males are neutered.
  • Kittens and puppies weighing as little as two pounds can be spayed or neutered. Check with your veterinarian.
  • One un-neutered male can impregnate dozens of females. So, it is just as important to neuter males as it is to spay females - even if you keep your pet confined or on a leash. Accidents happen when you least expect them.
  • Spaying and neutering reduces or eliminates the risk of certain types of cancer that can kill your pet and are expensive to treat.
  • Spaying and neutering may eliminate undesirable behaviors such as fighting, spraying, and roaming. This, in turn, helps prevent injury and veterinary expenses.
  • Dogs do not become less protective of their guardians or homes as a result of being spayed or neutered.
  • Neutering does not make your male pet less "masculine". On the contrary, it prevents male feminizing syndrome by preventing estrogen-secreting testicular tumors.
  • Spaying and neutering are not "unnatural" but humane and life-affirming means of ending the tragedy of having to euthanize healthy, adoptable pets.
  • Spaying and neutering is as vital to your pet's overall well-being as routine physical examinations, good nutrition, grooming, playtime, and love.
  • Spaying and neutering are affordable. The Sequoia Humane Society offers low-cost spay/neuter vouchers to qualified low-income individuals and families.
