Search & Rescue Dogs

Search & Rescue Dogs

Michelle Vaughn & "Comet" from the Salinas Fire Department

The mission of the Search Dog Foundation is to produce the most highly trained canine disaster search teams in the nation. The job of these teams is to find people buried alive in the wreckage of natural disasters and terrorist attacks.

To create these teams SDF recruits rescued dogs from shelters and rescue groups, gives them professional training, and partners them with firefighters and other first responders at no cost to their departments. They ensure lifetime care for every dog in their program—once rescued these dogs will never need to be rescued again.

The Sequoia Humane Society was fortunate enough to be selected by SDF for an onsite visit to evaluate the potential of our shelter dogs and determine the possibility of entering them into the SDF training program. Karen Klingberg—an SDF representative—performed a series of tests on 4 SHS dogs that had shown some inclination for the types of behaviors SDF looks for in search & rescue dog candidates.

It takes a very special dog to meet the demands of a search dog. These characteristics are essential: bold, energetic & athletic; a strong play/prey drive; well-socialized, personable & outgoing, able to ignore loud & sudden noises; sure footed; and excellent health. These are the traits typically found in hunting and herding breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Border Collies, and very often these are the types of dogs that are the first to be put down in shelters due to their overly obsessive behavior.

While none of the SHS dogs were selected to join the ranks of the SDF search & rescue teams, we learned a lot about what to look for in the dogs that come through the shelter and will be keeping an eye out for that special canine that is destined to save lives.
