LOVE IS…A DAY WITHOUT CHAINS
Dogs Deserve Better, 2003 First Place Winner of the ASPCA/Chase Pet Protector Award, promotes compassion toward chained and penned dogs and encourages pet owners to liberate dogs from their chains and invite them to be part of the family. Many chained dogs sit, lay, eat, and defecate within the same 10-foot radius day after day, often for their entire life. They exist without respect, love, exercise, social interaction, and sometimes even basic nourishment, living as virtual prisoners, yet longing to be loved companions. Chaining is not only inhumane for dogs, but has taken a severe toll on this nation’s children as well. In the period from October 2003 through January 2007, there were at least 112 children killed or seriously injured by chained dogs across the country. Chained dogs, un-socialized with humans, can become very territorial of their tiny space, and any two year old who wanders into this space can be attacked and killed before adults can intervene. Dogs Deserve Better has chosen the week before Valentine’s Day – a time when we typically share the gift of love with those we care about - to bring attention to the plight of chained dogs by sending out Valentine’s to chained and penned dogs in the U.S., Canada and Australia. In 2006 they delivered over 5,600 Valentines – this year their goal is to reach at least 8,000 chained dogs with cards that encourage their owners to remove their chains. “This is a great time to educate pet owners about the negative consequences of tethering dogs,” says Cynthia MacMillan, executive director of the Sequoia Humane Society. “The California legislature recently passed a law making it illegal to chain or tether a dog to any stationary object for more than 3 hours a day. Obviously people are recognizing that tying dogs up isn’t healthy or humane.” This Valentine season consider how you can help the dogs in your neighborhood. If you see a dog that is chained or a penned dog daily, contact your local animal control agency. Another way you can celebrate Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week is to take your dog for an extra long walk, buy it a new toy or treat, spend time grooming or playing with your dog, or offer to take your neighbor’s dog for a walk. The Sequoia Humane Society is a no-kill shelter whose mission is to promote the humane treatment of all animals and end pet overpopulation through programs such as adoption, spay/neuter and education.
