Four million cats and dogs—about one every eight seconds—are put down in U.S. shelters each year. Often these animals are the offspring of cherished family pets, even purebreds. Maybe someone’s cat or dog got out just that one time or maybe the litter was intentional, but efforts to find enough good homes failed. Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100-percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats and a proven way to reduce the vast numbers of animals who are born only to die prematurely and without a family who loves them.
Spay Day USA is an annual campaign of The Humane Society of the United States to inspire people to save animal lives by spaying or neutering pets and feral cats. The Sequoia Humane Society participates in Spay Day by promoting spay/neuter within our communities through low-cost spay/neuter programs, and through presentations to school groups on the importance of spay/neuter in reducing the number of animals entering our shelters every year. You can participate in Spay Day USA by signing up for the Spay Day Photo Contest! Here’s how the contest works: • Starting January 19th, anyone can upload a photo of their pet. • When contestants enter their photos, they can choose an eligible Spay Day event organizer (like the Sequoia Humane Society) to receive money generated by votes received for their pet’s picture. • Contestants can ask friends and family to vote for their pets. Each vote costs $1 (minimum 5 vote purchase), which is donated to the eligible Spay Day event organizer (that’s us!) of the contestant’s choice. • After Spay Day is over, SHS will receive 100% of the donations designated for us, to be used for even more spay/neuter surgeries after Spay Day USA is over. To register for the Spay Day Photo Contest, and to vote for your favorite pet, go to www.humanesociety.org/spayday, or call SHS at 442-1782 for more information. humane@sequoiahumane.org |
